Measuring circularity potential of construction materials – new EPD initiative from ECO Platform

An exciting development – results from a pilot study that is being conducted by the ECO Platform – will eventually be filtered into the Global GreenTag Environmental Product Declaration™ (GreenTag EPD™) program.

The international non-profit association ECO Platform, of which the Global GreenTag EPD program is formally recognised by and approved as an ECO EPD programme, has launched an extensive pilot study for integrating circularity indicators into Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs).

The initiative is expected to add significant benefits to progressive construction materials manufacturers who have submitted their products to Environmental Product Declaration processes that meet ECO Platform EPD standards and ultimately, be of important value to building projects that are focused on circular economy design.

Dr Nana Bortsie-Aryee, Program Director of Global GreenTag International says: "the initiative by ECO Platform marks a significant step towards improving how we measure the circularity potential of construction materials and enhancing sustainability in the built environment industry. For the benefit of our EPD clients, we are keen to see the results of this pilot study and how it will add even more value to our EPD program.

The pilot phase, which follows a proposal tabled in June 2024 by ECO Platform's CE (Circular Economy) Task Group commences in October.

The study will analyse stakeholder participation from construction products manufacturers and LCA consultants, applying a total of 17 aspects that will enable manufacturers participating in the study to test the practical applicability of circularity concepts with their products to declare the circularity potential of their products within the EPD framework.

The LCA Consultants who applied to participate in the study will be supporting the manufacturers throughout the data collection process and assist in conducting and documenting the circularity assessments to contribute to the development of streamlined guidelines.
