Exemplar results revealed in Global GreenTag EPD investigation of Weathertex products

NEWS RELEASE: Australian building cladding and underlay manufacturer Weathertex has been awarded four Environmental Product Declarations under the Global GreenTag EPD™ program.

Australian based company Weathertex has pursued sustainable manufacturing practices for many years and has worked with Global GreenTag International on a number of sustainable product certifications for their ranges of cladding and underlay products. To further measure and quantify the value of their materials for the built environment – and particularly for green projects that are rapidly pursuing higher benchmark outcomes in carbon saving and Circular Economy design, Weathertex has dived deeper. They submitted products with GreenTag's EN 15804 Environmental Product Declaration (GreenTag EPD™) ECO EPD program to provide the market with critical environmental impact data to help interpret and tell the life cycle story of their products from cradle to the factory gate and beyond.

The EPD report from all four of Weathertex's newly issued GreenTag EPDs, including the three cladding product lines of Unprimed Flatsheets & Weatherboards, Primed Flatsheets & Weatherboards and Primelok and the Trimtec Underlay reveal that Weathertex is managing very carefully the Greenhouse Warming Potential (GWP) of their processes with each of these four products successfully removing between 0.13-0.4kg CO2 equivalent from the atmosphere due largely to high levels of carbon sequestration in the wood. This implies a climate-positive impact from cradle to gate for the product.

Dr Nana Bortsie-Aryee, Program Director of Global GreenTag International and the Global GreenTagCertTM Product Certification Standards said:

"Looking in more detail at Weathertex's EPDs, we can also get down to a more granular, scientific level to show the EPDs also investigate and report on the use of primary source raw materials and found that resource depletion was very low for the Weathertex cladding products, which for the cladding products are made with around 96-97% renewable, Responsible Wood and PEFC certified materials from forest by-products and for the underlay, more like 98-99% renewable sources."

Jason O'Hagan, Managing Director of Weathertex, said:

"At Weathertex, we are thrilled to announce our new Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), certified by Global GreenTag and compliant with ISO 14025 and EN 15804+A2 standards. These updated EPDs reflect our dedication to transparency in environmental performance, providing our clients and partners with verified, credible data about the impacts of our products. This achievement reinforces our focus on sustainable building materials, bringing added value and confidence to everyone who chooses Weathertex."

David Baggs, CEO, Technical Director and Cofounder of Global GreenTag International who has worked with Weathertex on their certification journey, over the years since GreenTag was first launched, said:

'The leadership at Weathertex is very driven to evolve their manufacturing standards and practices in ways that always consider the needs of the environment. Their EPDs tell the story. Knowing the company's passion for growth in sustainability, I expect they will continue to reflect on their data and work on new solutions to improve even more on their current performance. These are the kinds of manufacturers that GreenTag are so proud of."

Dr Bortsie-Aryee adds:

"EPDs are so important to dig into every stage of a product's manufacturing journey. In these times, there needs to be a strong focus on the protection, restoration and rejuvenation of biodiversity. The lifecycle inventory data that EPDs extrapolate are fundamental to provide the market with proper data to support a healthier environment and future for all. Weathertex are doing their part very well to support construction projects that are also aiming to lessen their impacts on the environment."

The ISO/EN compliant Global GreenTag EPD™ program is formally recognised and approved as an established ECO EPD programme and full ECO Platform member, the first in Australia to achieve this standing. The reporting of the program's LCA studies are issued as ISO 14025 and EN 15804 compliant EPDs. These summary LCA reports - where requested or relevant to local scheme requirements - can also be reported in accordance with ISO 21930. In these formats they assist projects gain credits for Green Star®, LEEDv4®* (140+ countries) and BREEAM®**. (40+ countries).
